GARY MOORE Interview From 1984 Available - "I Think That Heavy Metal Guitar Has Been One Of The Aspects Of Rock Music That You Can’t Really Ignore"







Ultimate-Guitar.com's Steven Rosen has posted an interview with legendary guitarist GARY MOORE, conducted in '84; Moore had just completed his Victims Of The Future album. An excerpt is available below:

UG: Heavy metal is back and it’s bigger than ever. How does this affect you and your playing? Do you go for a heavier sound?

Moore: "I don’t think heavy metal ever really disappeared. Depending on where you were and who you associated with, I think it’s always been around. I think that heavy metal guitar has been one of the aspects of rock music that you can’t really ignore. I think it’s one of the things that will always be there. But I don’t particularly consider myself a heavy metal guitarist. I consider myself a rock and roll guitarist. Sometimes I do play heavy metal guitar but I do have other things to say on the guitar."

UG: RITCHIE BLACKMORE used a keyboard player in DEEP PURPLE – Jon Lord – to act as a sort of rhythm guitar player. You’ve always used keyboard players in your bands [everyone from Tommy Eyre and Neil Carter to Don Airey].

Moore: "If you’re in a band you can approach it one of two ways: You can play very, very had rock or what I like to do is cover the whole range of music and give it a little more subtlety with the keyboard,” he explains. “If you’ve got a chord sequence gong on and you want to suggest the notes of the chord sequence with the guitar, it’s very difficult if you’re the only guitarist. So it is nice to have that midrange thing there underneath you so the listener knows what’s going on all the time."

UG: What do you think about more contemporary players like EDDIE VAN HALEN?

Moore: "I think Ed was responsible for his own style really. I don’t think he was particularly responsible for making people aware of the guitar. I think he was like a second-generation player. At one point he could have gotten hold of the guitar and really turned it into something special. But really, what he did was secondary. For one album he did something fresh and after that he sort of went downhill."

On Sunday, February 6th, 2011 musician Gary Moore died in his sleep of a heart attack while on holiday in Spain.

Acknowledged as one of the finest guitarists that the British Isles has ever produced; Gary Moore’s career dated back to the sixties. Moore graced the lineups of several notable rock bands including THIN LIZZY, COLLOSSEUM II and SKID ROW, to name but three, and to this year maintained a highly successful solo career.

Gary is survived by four children; daughters Saoirse and Lily and sons Jack and Gus. His family take great comfort in the fact he died of natural causes and was looking forward to his holiday prior to recording a new album. Gary was thrilled by new guitars he had just bought and was planning to play shows throughout the world, later this year.

His family has requested that their privacy is respected during this sad time and no further comment will be made. They would very much like to express their heartfelt thanks for the show of support and all the kind messages from friends and fans alike, the world over.
