BENEDICTUM - Dominion Album Artwork, Tracklisting Revealed; Audio Samples Available

Frontiers Records has announced the release of BENEDICTUM's anticipated third full length album, entitled Dominion, on February 18th in Europe and March 8th in North America.

BENEDICTUM - new album Benedictum

Surging forward as they are driven by the powerful momentum of front woman Veronica Freeman - whose unique and powerful style has been called one of the truly most extraordinary voices in metal - and the guitar pyrotechnics of writer and guitarist Pete Wells, the time has come for the world to be on notice. Benedictum is again upon us.

Formed in 2005 and quickly noticed by DIO guitarist Craig Goldy, the wheels were soon set in motion for their debut album, Uncreation. The collaboration of producer Jeff Pilson (DOKKEN, Dio, FOREIGNER) and the musical works of vocalist Veronica Freeman and Pete Wells along with the talent of drummer Blackie Sanchez, bassist Jesse Wright and keyboardist Chris Morgan, Uncreation was released to great reviews. Guest appearances included Jeff Pilson, Craig Goldy and Jimmy Bain.

The result of the second collaboration between Jeff Pilson and Benedictum was their 2008 release, Seasons Of Tragedy, which evolved them into metal force which could not be denied. With Veronicas’ raw and powerful vocals, songs with memorable melodies and the magical talent of Pete Wells along with new drummer Paul Courtois and the guidance of Jeff Pilson, Seasons of Tragedy further solidified the fact that there was something quite special at work here. Seasons of Tragedy garnered more great reviews and were on many a list for top albums of 2008. Guest appearances again by Jeff Pilson, Craig Goldy and also George Lynch who added his special flare to the track 'Bare Bones' and the cover of ACCEPT's 'Balls To The Wall'.

Their driving music and energetic shows allowed Benedictum to grace the stage of many festivals including Wacken, Gods of Metal, HRH and a tour with DORO.

Now ready for yet another amazing chapter, Benedictum are off on a new and exciting musical episode as they have signed a contract with Frontiers Records. Building upon their great foundation Benedictum has recruited Grammy Award winning producer Ryan Greene (MEGADETH, F5, MXPX, NOFX) and are firing on all cylinders. With members Chris Shrum now on bass, Mike Pannone on drums and Tony Diaz on keyboards the new music promises to continue to expand the horizon for Benedictum and is sure to please current fans as well.

From the onslaught of the opening track 'Dominion' to the epic 'Epsilon' and the heartfelt acoustic track 'Sanctuary', this album has it all. Adding to the already explosive sound of Dominion are guest appearances by Jeff Pilson, Craig Goldy and none other than Rudy Sarzo on the fist pumping track, 'Bang'.

BENEDICTUM - Dominate Tricks

By Carl Begai

Arizona-based BENEDICTUM are six years and three albums into their career and going stronger than expected. They’ve slogged through early stage indifference of the US market – which has since woken up and smelled the brimstone – line-up changes, and the all too familiar label woes, resurfacing from two years of silence with an obnoxious slab of old school metal entitled Dominion. No death, black, prog or screamo prefix stapled to their collective forehead, Benedictum remain an oddity in a world populated with female fronted bands wishing they were next EPICA or ARCH ENEMY. This time out, however, they are being watched with a serious eye by metal fans and the media rather than the fickle attention usually reserved for a Saturday night bar band.

BENEDICTUM - new album Veronica1

“I’m extremely grateful because, one way or another, people are sitting up and taking notice,” says vocalist Veronica Freeman. “I think a lot of that has to do with our new label (Frontiers Records) and just being able to get out there and do press. I’ve been quite happy to go and do these little radio station takeovers and whatnot, it’s great. The reactions in the UK, the Netherlands, especially the US have been super positive, but there have been some bad reviews along the way. In fact, I think one of the worst reviews I’ve ever gotten came out of Germany. I get where the people that don’t like it are coming from, though, because I think some of them were a little shocked by Dominion. It’s still traditional, just heavier and darker, and I guess that rubbed some people the wrong way.”

Adding to some people’s consternation might be the fact that Freeman, who is quite obviously a woman, has a vocal range and depth that crushes any preconceived notions of her being a prissy School-Of-VIXEN Barbie doll. Simply put, her voice is so powerful there are moments she sounds like a dude.

“I wanted to really be able to… yes, I wanted to go there. I have a loud voice and I have that low register thing that I do, and I wanted to develop it even more. I still want to be understood, though. It’s the other end of the spectrum from the operatic vocals, that growling stuff – which is amazing – but it’s not me either.”

“I get that a lot,” she says of the male vocal comparisons, “but that’s cool, and I guess it’s because the vocals are more raw on Dominion compared to Seasons Of Tragedy and Uncreation. And I have to be honest, I was encouraged to go there by our producer Ryan Greene . He was like, ‘No no no, bring it. Don’t get mad, just bring it.’ Which I did (laughs).”

BENEDICTUM - new album Benedictum

“I was mad, though,” Freeman admits. “Mad and frustrated because it took so long to get things together for Dominion. I’m relieved the album is out because it’s been tough getting here. It’s been like giving birth this time around. Frickin’ labour pains; ‘No, not quite yet. Nope, almost…’ I’m so glad we have it out and on a label that’s behind us. You have no idea…”

As rooted as Benedictum is in traditional metal, they’ve always been up for stepping outside the box. Dominion continues their personal tradition of offering up something other than the four minute anthem. Freeman, it turns out, is a shameless prog fan.

“Yep, you’ve got it. People are actually starting to get that about us, because from the very beginning, when we were working with Jeff Pilson (producer / ex-Dokken bassist) on Uncreation, that was my thing. I cut my teeth on stuff like RAINBOW’s ‘Stargazer’ all the way to the RUSH stuff. I was weaned on the songs that you could put on, go outside and wash the car, and when you’re done and go back inside the song is still playing (laughs).”

Resulting in two crushers on Dominion; a cover of ‘Overture’ / ‘The Temples Of Syrinx’ from the Rush classic ‘2112’ (which deserved its own story and got one here) and the all-original ‘Epsilon’, both of which Freeman had a hand in building. She dismisses the suggestion that her bandmates composed the music while she kept her nose out of the creative process beyond laying down the vocals.

“No, it’s not like that. We decided that we’re going to have what we call our epic song – a long song over seven or eight minutes – on each album. On Uncreation it was ‘Valkyrie’, on Seasons Of Tragedy it was the title track, which was even longer. On Dominion we have ‘Epsilon’, and you should have heard the original demo. We shaved a minute-and-a-half off it. The original intro was two minutes thirty seconds before you hit any vocals.”

Bottom line is that Benedictum’s idea of traditional or old school metal is rooted in the ‘70s, when musical diversity was king.

“One thing I really like about this album, which not everybody does, is that at least when you have this album in your car stereo you’re going to know when the song is done,” says Freeman. “You’re not going to catch yourself saying ‘Oh, is that a different song? It sounds the same as the last one.’ There was definitely a conscious effort to keep things interesting because of how much that repetitive stuff bothers me. If every other song has sounds the same or you take a variation of what you just did, you didn’t put a lot of effort into the music and that bugs me. Some people like the familiarity of it, and that’s fine, but I’d rather shake things up.”

BENEDICTUM Guitarist Pete Wells - "We Didn't Set Out To Sound European; It’s In Our Roots"

Hot Flashes

Posted on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 13:40:09 EST

By Carl Begai

BENEDICTUM guitarist Pete Wells doesn’t look like a shred lord, true enough. Judging this particular book by its cover is an exercise in narrowminded ignorance, however, as Wells has been turning fretboards to sawdust since the band surfaced in 2006 woth Uncreation. Dominion is album #3 for the Arizona-based outfit, an ambitious old school follow-up to their Seasons Of Tragedy record from 2008 that showcases Wells’ playing front and center alongside vocalist Veronica Freeman. And it’s clear that, as Freeman is so fond of saying, the Benedictum sound wouldn’t exist without him.

BENEDICTUM - new album PeteWells2

“Dominion is easily my favorite of the three albums we’ve done,” says Wells. “There was a lot of pressure making this CD. New label, new producer, and new band members. These new band members came to the table with different influences, different ideas, and a desire to participate in the writing process. I write the majority of the parts to the songs, but Chris (Shum/bass) has a similar writing style as I do. The song ‘Dominion’ is mostly his riffs, and I added a riff or two and changed some of the phrasing to give it that Benedictum flair.”

“As far as how we write, Veronica will ask us for whatever we’ve been working on. She then goes through and weeds out riffs that don’t inspire or spark any ideas, then she’ll make us a rough recording of the riffs in the order she would like them placed. With the exception of ‘Bang’ on this album, Veronica will normally write around the music. We challenged ourselves to grow as a band musically while maintaining the Benedictum feel and I think we succeeded in that task. First and foremost we try to stay true to ourselves. We don’t set out to sound a certain way. Veronica and I are well rooted in ‘80s metal, it’s what we grew up on. As we matured as people and musicians our influences widened, and that’s what fuels the Benedictum sound.”

Wells is severely underrated as a guitarist with a style reminiscent of Jake E. Lee (OZZY OSBOURNEBENEDICTUM - new album Mag-glass_10x10), Criss Oliva (SAVATAGE) and the equally underrated Pete Lesperance (HAREN SCAREM) as Dominion plays out.

BENEDICTUM - new album PeteWells3

“My favourite solo on the new CD is either ‘Shadowlands’, ‘Grind It’ or ‘Prodigal Son’,” says Wlls. “My inspiration for this album was to really get across who I am as a guitarist and songwriter. Although I liked my playing on the first two CDs, it wasn’t indicative of who I really am. Working with Ryan (Greene/producer) on this one, I think he was able to capture what it is that I do. He challenged me and I thank him for that.”

The Lesperance comparison may seem odd for those that are aware of Harem Scarem’s melodic rock sound, but the piece ‘Beautiful Pain’ features an unusually naked instrumental – all Wells and atmosphere – echoing Lesperance’s ‘Mandy’.

Tony (Diaz/keyboards) had sent over some new ideas and it just so happened to come on a day when my wife, who is battling fibromyalgia, was having a horrible day. She had fallen and was crying and couldn’t get herself up. It really hurt me to see her like that. That passage came about from those feelings. It’s a beautiful song but at the same time very sad.”

When the band gets down to serious business as a group, they sound as if they were born and bred on the European / UK scene. Wells is understandably proud of those influences.

“In all honesty, we didn’t set out to sound European, but again, it’s in our roots. I grew up on Ozzy with Randy Rhoads and Jake E. Lee, IRON MAIDEN, SAXON, JUDAS PRIEST, BLACK SABBATHBENEDICTUM - new album Mag-glass_10x10 to name a few. And on a further note, almost all of my true guitar heroes are from European countries. As far as making noise here in the States, early reviews are coming back very favourable. We’re hoping to be able to do more at home this year as well.”
