BraveWords.com Presents The Brave Picks Top 30 Of 2010 ... #27 Revealed!

Hot Flashes

Posted on Saturday, December 04, 2010 at 10:00:34 EST

We continue to count down the finest slabs of metal from the last year, as chosen by the devout scribes here at BW&BK/BraveWords.com. As with previous years, each writer was asked to pick his top 20 albums of the year (no live records, compilations or covers etc...). We preform a little behind-the-scenes metal math and voila, we have our list! We'll be counting down the Top 30 all month - yup, one a day until we get to New Year's - yes, we're aware that December has 31 daze but we thought we'd let you hang until January 1st!

It's time for #27 - drum roll please...

#27 - HAIL OF BULLETS - On Divine Winds (Metal Blade)

Dutch death metal masters HAIL OF BULLETS - featuring former GOREFEST drummer Ed Warby - returned with their second full-length album in October.

Warby - who also produced On Divine Winds - remarked recently: "I don't think I've ever worked this hard on anything in my entire life, but it sure has paid off! Although Of Frost And War is a tough act to follow, my ringing ears tell me we've succeeded in besting it on every level: songs, playing, production (by Dan Swanö; ex-EDGE OF SANITY, BLOODBATH, NIGHTINGALE). All the main ingredients of our blood 'n' guts style death metal have remained intact and I honestly can't imagine anyone that liked our previous work is going to be the least bit disappointed, on the contrary!"

The album title On Divine Winds refers to the translation for the Japanese word Kamikaze, as kami stands for "God" and kaze means "wind".

Hail Of Bullets recently premiered their video for the track ‘Operation Z’, the first single off On Divine Winds. Check it out below.

Says the band: “December 7th, 1941... October 18th, 2010... two dates that will live in infamy: on the first Japan attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, on the second Hail Of Bullets launch their new video for 'Operation Z', a song about this very attack from their crushing new album On Divine Winds! Combining explosive live footage from the Bullets’ appearance at this year’s Summer Breeze festival with authentic WWII footage, the video shows the band captured in full scale war mode by a fearless camera crew… Banzai!”

#21 - DARKTHRONE - Circle The Wagons (Peaceville)

Legendary Norwegian black metallers DARKTHRONE released their latest studio album, Circle The Wagons, in April.

About the release, Darkthrone drummer/lyricist, Fenriz remarked, "it is a message to the invaders of our metal domain to circle their wagons! With our own brand of heavy metal/speed metal-punk we are a constant ambush on the modern overground metal traitors. Join us in our fight against instant gratification, and let's see who stands when the smoke clears.”

Circle The Wagons featured artwork courtesy of Dennis Dread, notable for his talents on previous Darkthrone albums, 2007's F.O.A.D and 2008’s Dark Thrones And Black Flags.

#10 - KYLESA - Spiral Shadow (Season Of Mist)
Much celebrated psych-rock co-ed Georgians KYLESA released their new album, Spiral Shadow in October. The band recorded the new album at the Jam Room in Columbia, SC earlier this summer with band member and renowned producer Phillip Cope (BARONESS, WITHERED) once again at the helm.

In his BraveWords.com review David Perri wrote: Since 2006’s Time Will Fuse Its Worth, Kylesa has proven itself to be the arbiter of underground cool, these Georgians understanding that metal and post-punk share a similar commonality once the rage wears off: melancholy. Investing its effort into creating the loud version of Manchester’s zeitgeist circa the early ‘80s, Kylesa has written and executed some of the best material of the last five years with the aforementioned Time Will Fuse Its Worth, last year’s Static Tensions and now the ultimate in distortion-meets-emptiness, Spiral Shadow. Though adhering to the record-on-fire principles that guided its previous two albums, Spiral Shadow deviates slightly and enters into genuinely Pink Floyd (circa Wish You Were Here and Animals) territory...

BraveWords.com Presents The Brave Picks Top 30 Of 2010 ... #5 Revealed!

Okay, Xmas is over and we are still counting down the finest slabs of metal from the last year, as chosen by the devout scribes here at BW&BK/BraveWords.com. As with previous years, each writer was asked to pick his top 20 albums of the year (no live records, compilations or covers etc...). We perform a little behind-the-scenes metal math and voila, we have our list!

We've been counting down the Top 30 all month ... our #1 Brave Pick of 2011 will be unveiled January 1st!

So now we've reached the much-anticipated TOP FIVE! Drum roll please...

#5 - NACHTMYSTIUM - Addicts: Black Meddle, Part II (Century Media)

Chicago-based NACHTMYSTIUM (led by mastermind Blake Judd) released their latest full-length offering, Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II, in June 8th. The disc was recorded once again with Sanford Parker (MINSK) at Volume Studios. The band enlisted the talents of Wrest (LEVIATHAN, LURKER OF CHALICE, TWILIGHT) to record all drum tracks as well as Will Lindsay (WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, MIDDIAN) on bass for this new album.

Judd further describes his excitement over this upcoming album: “Our love for post rock and industrial (a la MINISTRY, KILLING JOKE) is even more present this time around. We feel that we made a record that will continue to push extreme music into uncharted territories. We hope to see you all soon.”

In his BraveWords.com review David Perri wrote:

Nachtmystium mastermind Blake Judd has been shattering black metal boundaries since 2006’s monumental Instinct: Decay and, with ‘08’s Assassins: Black Meddle Part I, may have written the ultimate, post-’91 black metal song in ‘Ghosts Of Grace’, a fascinating and incredible take on how far you can push black metal into the realms of its antithesis. Even if you’ve been an adherent of Judd’s work in the past, nothing - and I really mean nothing - can prepare you for Addicts: Black Meddle Part II (if you’re wondering, ‘Meddle’ is indeed an intentional Pink Floyd reference), a record that wildly swings Nachtmystium into the realms of new wave; though Judd has always dabbled in Joy Division-esque episodes of the post-punk sombre, this time his main inspiration is seemingly Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore.

When asked about Nachtmystium's massive changes from record to record, do you ever worry about alienating your fan-base? Or is that just not a concern for Nachtmystium?
Judd: “It’s not really a concern for us. People who are concerned about what their fans think before they do what they do are, instinctively as artists, limiting themselves in a way. Allowing an audience to dictate to them what music they should be making is a sad state of affairs when it gets to that point. I don’t really think about it. The music I listen to these days is pretty poppy in general. I like a lot of stuff that’s a little more accessible than, say, super underground black metal is. And I think it comes through in the writing. I just keep my fingers crossed that people will like it. If they do, cool. If not, whatever. I like it, so fuck it.”
